Islamabad: The reported order by the Ministry of Interior to halt activities of Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids (CTFK) and Vital Strategies has raised concerns.
These two International Non-Governmental Organizations (INGOs) had long adopted a stance that they are working against smoking for health purposes.
It is surprising that these INGOs did not follow the law and the government had to take this extreme step.
Capital Calling, a research and publication company, is the only credible entity whose research on taxing tobacco has been cited by the IMF in its report on tax reforms for Pakistan.
We believe a thorough probe into activities of these INGOs is needed to identify the people who have dented the cause of tobacco control in Pakistan.
Capital Calling has strived for improving quality of research on smoking in Pakistan. At present, different groups have been carrying out research on smoking from different perspectives. They produce reports which are unsubstantiated by evidence on the ground. We demand that a mechanism be put in place to improve quality of research.
